Which Truck is Best in Terms of Towing and Payload Capacity?

So this question has been coming up a lot lately. Its all over the internet. The thing is, is all of these sources are claiming different things. So we figured we would dive deep into the vast array of different sources(so you don’t have to) and see which half ton pick up truck is truly the best for towing. We will base this research on pure stats alone, no opinion based bias from us, which we suspect COULD be the reason for so many different answers, though thats what it all comes down to, is personal preference, so go with what you like, but just for fun lets see how the stats stack up.

So right off the back, if you compare multiple sites findings, you will see some conflicting information, actually you will see a lot. There’s not even 2 sites that are on the same page. On one page you will find that the Ford F150 is the best truck, but on another page you will find the Chevy Silverado as number one. Which leads us to question these findings, are these truly unbiased findings, or are personal preferences bleeding through to these reports? Could Be. So as we said before lets look at towing and payload capacities for these trucks.

Max Payload Comparison

(Year Make Model | Configuration | Max Payload)
2018 Ford F-150 | 5.0L V8 / 10-speed auto | 3,270 lbs
2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 | 4.3L V6 / 6-speed auto | 2,500 lbs
2019 Ram 1500 (DT) | 3.6L V6 / 8-speed auto | 2,320 lbs
2018 Nissan Titan 1500 | 5.6L V8 / 7-speed auto | 1,950 lbs
2018 Toyota Tundra | 4.6L V8 / 6-speed auto | 1,730 lbs
*rated by manufacturers

So at face value, it does appear that the Ford F-150 wins in the Max Payload Category, but keep in mind there’s many factors that play into the overall performance of a truck, so depending on the exact configuration these findings could in fact change. Now, take a look at the towing capacities.

Max Towing Comparison

(Year Make Model | Configuration | Max Towing)
2018 Ford F-150 | 3.5L V6 / 10-speed auto | 13,200 lbs
2019 Ram 1500 | 5.7L V8 / 8-speed auto | 12,750 lbs
2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 | 6.2L V8 / 10-speed auto | 12,200 lbs
2018 Toyota Tundra | 5.7L V8 / 6-speed auto | 10,200 lbs
2018 Nissan Titan | 5.6L V8 / 7-speed auto | 9,740 lbs
*rated by manufacturers

Here, at face value, it appears that the Ford F-150 is victorious once again, but if you notice the configuration, it’s running a 3.5L V6, while others on the list are repping a V8… so like we said above, there’s many factor’s that play into these stats.

So Which One is the Best?

So whats the best for towing? Well as you may have picked up, that’s kind of a hard question to answer, it kind of comes back to not only personal preference, but what exactly your going to be towing(weight), the type of terrain, configuration, etc. Not to mention what you actually want in your truck. Maybe you want a V8 and you know your not going to be towing more than 12,000 lbs, than the Ford F-150 is not the best truck for you, it would be the Ram or Chevy… UNLESS YOU WANT A FORD! See where I’m Going, there’s so many factors that play into the answer of this question that it really comes down to individual, specific situations.
